Oral Piercing Aftercare

WE ARE NOT PHYSICIANS AND THIS IS NOT A CLINICAL PRESCRIPTION. THESE ARE RECOMMENDATIONS BASED ON PAST EXPERIENCE AND MAY NOT BE RIGHT FOR YOU.

Labret and Lip Piercings

Healing time: 6-8 weeks

What you need:

For the outside: Pierced ear care antiseptic or Bactine,

For the inside: Listerine or other antibacterial mouthwash, Gly-Oxide (check oral medications section of pharmacy)

Healing Plan:

Wash hands thoroughly before contact with piercing. No oral contact of any kind for 6 weeks (no wet kissing or oral sex without a barrier). For the first 24-48 hours, gently suck on ice (or popsicles) to minimize swelling. Reduce intake of warm beverages, hot/spicy foods, tobacco, alcohol, and anything which might be irritating to your mouth during healing, especially the first week. Rinse with a 50/50 solution of mouthwash for 30-60 seconds after consumption of anything other than water. Use antiseptic twice daily following the instructions on the bottle. DO NOT OMIT THIS STEP. You might want to rinse with water or a 1/4 teaspoon salt to 8 oz of water solution after use. The outer opening of the piercing is best treated using ear care solution or Bactine. If the Bactine is too harsh, it may be dilluted slightly with water. Apply liberally with a cotton swab while rotating jewelry. Do this 2-3 times daily. Continue the above care regimen for 6-8 weeks.

Tongue Piercings

The tongue piercing heals best with a post about 1/4" longer than the thickness of the tongue. Once swelling has gone down, usually 1-3 weeks, the post can be downsized to a slightly shorter but still roomy length. After 6-8 weeks you can wear a stud the length of the piercing. On a regular basis, wash your hands and then check to make sure that the stud balls have not worked loose.

If you have any questions always ask your piercer or consult a qualified physician.
